The  Important Thing About Fiber
 
Research has shown that fiber helps reduce the rapid rise in blood sugar that tends to take place after eating foods containing carbohydrates.  It does this by slowing down there digestion. This helps blunt the impact of eating carbohydrates.
 
There are basically two types of fiber.  They are:
 
1.  The first fiber is known as Insoluble Fiber.  Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and contributes to the roughage or bulk to our intestinal track.  Insoluble fiber helps us to prevent constipation, remove toxins from our intestinal track and balance the ph in our system.
Insoluble fiber can be found in the following foods:
 
 - Vegetables such as green beans and dark  green leafy vegetables
 - Fruit skins and root vegetable skins
 - Whole-wheat products
 - Wheat oat
 - Corn bran
 - Seeds & Nuts
 
2. The next known fiber are called soluble fibers since this fiber does dissolve in water making it a vital component of blood glucose control for many diabetics.  Soluble fiber are known to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates.  Thus, this results in the slowing down of peaks and valley in your blood sugar.  Soluble fiber is helps us lower blood sugar and decrease blood sugar in the urine.  In addition, soluble fiber decreases insulin needs and increases tissue sensitivity to insulin.   Finally, soluble fiber also helps in cardiovascular disease.  Thus, this is the good fiber to have in your system.
A few of the most common foods that contain soluble fiber are:
 
 Oat/Oat bran
 Dried beans and peas
 Nuts
 Barley
 Flax seed
 Fruits such as oranges and apples
 Vegetables such as carrots
 
 
As a rule , most people seem to adjust to more fiber in their diet within about 5 or 6 weeks.  During this time period you may notice a little uninvited gas.  I suggest that to minimize the side effects such as diarrhea or abdominal pain you should increase your fiber slowly and drink plenty of water.
 
Remember, it is important for you to include fiber in your diet and ideally a small portion with every meal would be the most beneficial.
