Managing Bladder Control Problems In Men
Men can have poor bladder control at any age. However, once they reach the age of 40, most men are prone to have poor bladder control. This poor bladder control is often due to prostate issues. It has been estimated that only about a third of men seek help from their doctor to manager bladder control problems.
Urinary symptoms can be a warning sign to help men manager bladder control. Sysptoms such as straining, frequency or reduced control of the bladder will often increase with age. Thus, it is advisable that men should talk to their doctor or other health professional about managing any bladder control concerns since most bladder control problems can often be easily treated.
Good bladder habits are important for a healthy and active lifestyle. Thus, it is suggested that to manage bladder control, men should follow the health habits outlined below.
1. Drink plenty of water - Adults should try to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day unless your doctor says this is not okay.
2. Do not drink too much coffee, tea or cola.
3. Do not get into the habit of going to the toilet "just in case". Instead, use the toilet only when your bladder is full and you need to go. Make sure that you empty your bladder. An exception to the toilet rule is to use the toilet just before you go to bed.
4. Keep good bowel habits by eating lots of fruits and vegetables to keep your bowel regular. Do a colen cleaning at least once a year.
5. Do not strain when using your bowel as this can weaken your pelvic floor muscles - the muscles that help keep bladder control. As in most cases with the human body, parts stretch and get weak with age. The floor of the pelvis is made up of layers of muscle and other tissues. These layers stretch like a hammock from the tailbone at the back to the pubic bone in front.
A man's pelvic floor muscles can be weakened by:
•prostate gland surgery
•straining to empty your bowel
•heavy lifting
•a cough that goes on for a long time
•being overweight and not being fit
Help manage the control of the bladder and the bowel by doing pelvic floor muscle training. Pelvic floor muscle training may also be useful for men who have an urgent need to pass urine frequently. Pelvic floor muscle exercises can be found on the internet.
6. Another means to manage your bladder control is to get annual checkups on your prostate gland. Generally, as men age their prostrate gland can get larger, sometimes causing problems with bladder control.
The prostate gland is small and is only found in men. The prostate gland is just below the neck of the bladder. The job of the prostate gland is to secrete a milky fluid that becomes part of the semen and nourishes the sperm.
However, as men age, the prostate gland enlarges and can cause urinary problems such as
•a slow and/or interrupted stream
•difficulty starting to pass urine
•increased need to pass urine more frequently
•a feeling of incomplete emptying
•loss of urinary control (eg incontinence)
Finally, to manage bladder control in men, I suggest that men talk to their doctor or a continence advisor if there are any changes in their bladder habits such as leaks, an urgent need to pass urine, etc.
